We are looking for an experienced and passionate English teacher practitioner with an outstanding track of records to join the EAL Department at Haileybury Astana School starting from August 2024.

Role Description:

This job description sets out the roles and responsibilities for an EAL teacher. The post-holder is expected to teach an agreed number of lessons in the Junior School. The possibility of also teaching in KS3 if necessary to a suitably qualified and experienced candidate.

Responsibilities:

General

  1. Teaching English as an additional language, predominantly in KS1 and above. The possibility of also teaching some KS3 English if necessary to a suitably qualified and experienced candidate.
  2. Support students’ learning across the curriculum, tailoring support to match learner’s needs.
  3. To support students to become independent, co-operative and collaborative learners.
  4. Support students’ access to learning through the effective use of ICT.
  5. Contribute to assessing students’ progress and support them in reviewing their own learning.
  6. Identify and remove barriers to students’ learning.
  7. Adapt and customize curriculum materials.
  8. Support teacher planning. Meeting students’ additional needs
  9. Support the learning of EAL students
  10. Promote EAL/SEN students’ well-being and resilience.
  11. Support the transition and transfer of EAL students. Supporting the wider work of the school, especially the English and SEN departments.
  12. Contribute to and support the regular review of EAL students

Planning, Teaching and Class Management

  1. Plan and teach according to the departmental schemes of work and programmes of study.
  2. Set high expectations for pupil behaviour and ensure they are met.
  3. Provide a clear structure for lessons, maintaining pace and challenge. Use a range of teaching methods to challenge pupils of all abilities and to ensure all pupils make progress.
  4. Plan opportunities to contribute to the pupil’s personal, moral, social and cultural development e.g. assemblies, academic and themed days etc.
  5. Work effectively with teaching assistants and technicians as appropriate, ensuring that they are aware of learning objectives and their role in achieving them.
  6. Establish a safe, supportive, attractive and stimulating learning environment.

Monitoring, Assessment, Recording and Reporting

  1. Assess how well learning objectives have been met and use this assessment to improve specific aspects of teaching.
  2. Mark and assess pupils’ work according to school and departmental policy, providing constructive feedback and setting targets for pupils’ progress.
  3. Assess and record each pupil’s progress systematically and use records to ensure that pupils make demonstrable progress.
  4. Provide written reports relating to the development and learning of pupils as requested.
  5. Build and maintain co-operative relationships with parents and communicate with them on pupils’ learning and progress. Write detailed and informative reports which highlight how pupils can improve their understanding in your subject area.

Welfare and Discipline Matters

  1. Monitor the work of class/form pupils, providing guidance, advice and admonishment.
  2. Write and maintain relevant records for individual student files and write reports.
  3. Lead Personal Development (PD) tutorial sessions.
  4. Communicate and consult with parents.
  5. Participate in, and document, meetings for any of the purposes above.
  6. Participate in the maintaining of high standards of behaviour and dress of pupils in the classroom and in all school locations and activities.
  7. Follow Haileybury Astana policies with regard to the health and safety of pupils both on and off the school premises when pupils are under the school’s jurisdiction.
  8. Take a pastoral interest in pupils in curriculum and extra-curricular activities and around the school environs so that they feel noticed, valued and cared for

Safeguarding Health & Safety

Everyone who works at Haileybury Astana has the responsibility for promoting the safeguarding and welfare of children.

  1. Promote and safeguard the welfare of children and young persons for whom you are responsible and with whom you come into contact;
  2. Maintain good order and discipline among the pupils and safeguard their health and safety, both when they are on the school premises and when they are engaged in authorised school activities elsewhere;
  3. Be aware of school policy and procedures regarding Child Protection and Safeguarding, and attend relevant training as required.
  4. Report all causes for concern to the Designated Senior Lead;

Provide thorough risk assessments as required prior to activities and trips.

Experience

  • Successful experience in working with pupils in the age group you are teaching

  • Demonstrated experience in inspiring pupils in a stimulating learning

  • environment Demonstrated experience of using ICT to promote learning

  • Ability to analyse student data to support student achievement

  • Demonstrated experience in raising achievement and setting challenging targets

  • Strong commitment to supporting all aspects of our programme, especially through participating actively in the extra-curricular activities and contributing to the life of the school community

  • Experience in teaching EAL pupils

  • Previous experience in an international school and familiarity with British education system

  • Minimum 3 years’ experience in teaching the subject

Qualifications

  • Graduate qualified teacher

  • Bachelor’s degree in the relevant subject area

  • Master’s degree an advantage

  • CELTA is an advantage
