The Makerspace Coordinator directs and oversees all operations of the Makerspace, working in close collaboration with the American Corner, library host institution, U.S. Mission to Kazakhstan’s Public Diplomacy Section (PDS), and multiple partners. The coordinator proactively manages services, programs, and resources; designs and delivers hands-on STEAM programs; and recruits experts and volunteers. The coordinator builds the Makers’ community and expands access to STEAM education by partnering with local institutions and conducting outreach events.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Maker Space Strategic Planning and Management 30%

Assists in the development of an annual strategic plan that supports the goals of the American Corner, Makerspace, and partners.

Adheres to host institution policies and procedures, and maintains effective communications with the American Corner, library host institution, PDS, and the Makerspace Expands! Public Private Partnership (PPP) Project Coordinator.

Continually assesses Makerspace policies and procedures for equipment use, course registration and club participation, and visitor responsibilities, etc.

Devises strategies for responsive and cost-effective public services and outreach.

Ensures online and offline programs for patrons meet goals and objectives.

Develops and manages a network of volunteers, including advertising, recruitment, training, and assigning roles and responsibilities to the volunteers.

Develops marketing for the Makerspace: coordinates a social media and web presence, and represents the Makerspace at technology events and shows.

Maintains an up-to-date calendar of events, programs, and courses offered by the Makerspace.

Maintains records and statistics on Makerspace programming and attendance and prepares analytical reports on programs and their effectiveness. Submits monthly reports and statistics to the employing organization and PDS.

Remains up-to-date with developments in Makerspace and their use in promoting education, entrepreneurship, and innovation. Keeps abreast of emerging technologies and the state of access to STEAM education in Kazakhstan.

  1. Maker Space Outreach and Programming: 50%

Develops and implements activities in cooperation with designated partners in support of the Makerspace Expands! PPP between PDS and Chevron.

Facilitates online and offline programs for patrons in order to meet goals and objectives.

Designs events, programs, and courses at the Makerspace and/or via outreach. Coordinates marketing, set-up, attendance and participation, and arranges facilitators and instructors.

Designs and delivers STEAM courses to a wide range of audiences, including young entrepreneurs, university and high school students, emerging leaders, unemployed youth, and underserved communities (including audiences in rural areas).

Works closely with instructors and students at local schools and universities to incorporate STEAM programs into curricula, through visits to the Makerspace, or through teacher training workshops.

Organizes and facilitates regular open, public hours at the Makerspace. Offers tours of the Makerspace and describes resources and services.

  1. Resource Management and Professional Development. 15%

Develops familiarity with all technology resources. Ensures that all equipment is in good working condition. Ensures equipment safety at the Makerspace.

Reviews resource needs, assesses new technology, and recommends additional resources that would add to the capabilities of the Makerspace.

  1. Other Duties as Assigned. 5%

MINIMUM DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

a. Education: A university degree or 5 years work experience in science, technology, computer science, engineering, manufacturing, math, computer programming, software design, creative arts, business, or management.

b. Prior Work Experience: Education requirement + one-year minimum work experience in program management, development and delivery of outreach programs, education and training, or technology management.

c. Language Proficiency: Intermediate to advanced English skills and fluency in Russian. Fluency in Kazakh would be an asset.

d. Knowledge: Familiarity with emerging technologies, computer programming or software design, 3D printing, robotics and/or electronics.

e. Skills and Abilities: Excellent interpersonal and cross-cultural skills. Ability to respond rapidly to complex requests; to independently plan, organize, and carry out assigned responsibilities; to maintain contact with target audience members; to prioritize work and incoming requests. Excellent written and oral communication skills.

POSITION ELEMENTS

a. Oversight Received: The employing organization will ensure the employee’s performance is adequate. Employee performance will be monitored by the host institution library director and PDS.

b. Available Guidelines: On-the-job training, and guidance from the employing organization, Makerspace Expands! PPP Project Coordinator, host institution and PDS.

c. Authority to Make Commitments: Authority to design, organize and deliver training sessions at the Makerspace, including contacting and negotiating with technology experts and trainers.

d. Nature, Level, and Purpose of Contacts: Daily contact with target audience and Makerspace visitors; contact with engineers, computer scientists, software designers, entrepreneurs, STEAM experts, teachers, and students. May assign responsibilities to volunteers.

e. Time Required to Perform Full Range of Duties after Entry Into the Position: With the necessary qualifications and prior work experience as stated above, an incumbent should be able to carry out duties within three months of assuming the position.

f. Work environment. Due to constant interaction with the public, work can be fast-paced and demanding. A constantly changing information environment requires continuous independent learning, and continual updating of technology-based and information skills. Travel outside of the city on an as-needed basis. Includes weekend and evening work.
